Therapeutic Metaphor and Storytelling
Sowing Seeds and Changing Landscapes

Course Themes

  • Isomorphic Metaphor Construction

  • Developing Action Orientated Stories

  • Creating a Personal Metaphor for Life

Stories have long been a highly effective medium for communicating important cultural and social messages and instilling positive and successful futures. The traditions of Native Americans, Zen and modern masters like Milton Erickson demonstrate the powerful effect of stories. Our minds work naturally in metaphor and this course is open to everyone with an interest in creating and telling stories in a contemporary way.  Specifically, it will include:

Construction variables

  • Precise strategies for metaphor design
  • Delivering a metaphor in different contexts
  • Enjoying spontaneous eruption of metaphor

Delivery variables

  • Voice tone, volume, pace and emphasis
  • Calibration and expressive delivery
  • Remembering your stories

Are you ready to use language as a major leverage point for helping others unconsciously re-organise their lives. Are you ready to explore your own personal stories of life? The two days focus on creating and applying metaphors for influence and change. The course is open to everyone with an interest in telling stories for themselves or with others. The course will be of interest to anyone who would like to be more elegant in their communication, including:

Coaches     Therapists     Teachers     Parents     Medical Staff     Trainers     Business Leaders

The structure of the programme will be reflexive to the needs of the individual needs in the group. We will include exercises, games, reflection, conversations and many stories. Some of the themes include:

Action Orientated Stories

In NLP we often say that "people are only doing the best they can with the resources they have available." Stories have long been used to help people connect with their inner resources for change, re-live their past successes and to imagine futures in which more than they could consciously imagine was possible.

  • Using the quotes pattern to deliver simple metaphors for change.
  • Creating naturalistic metaphors and stories to inspire action.

Isomorphic Metaphor Construction

Metaphor works at different levels. Milton Erickson suggests “when I am talking to a person at the conscious level, I expect him to be listening to me at an unconscious level, as well as consciously”.  When you tell a story, the conscious mind processes the content of story while the unconscious is receiving the embedded messages within the story. The embedded message creates generative change while the conscious mind focuses on the surface level of the story.

  • Creating parallel realities in a story (as happens in dreams) so people at the unconscious level can resolve their issues.
  • How to construct a metaphorical space that inspires the listener to search for new solutions and make choices that suit their particular situation.

Metaphors for Life

John Grinder says “metaphor is a way of delivering a message”. We have all gown up from childhood with messages that shape our life—some in a negative way and many in a positive way. What are the messages that have guided us and how can we create a positive and empowering metaphor for the future

  • Recognising deep metaphors and changing those that no longer serve us well. You are invited to bring along a short story, a poem or fairytale from childhood that you found particularly significant.
  • Using physical metaphors from the natural world to support and guide change, development and learning.

The training will be led by  Neal Anderson, an experienced coach and therapist. I am a Neuro Linguistic Psychotherapist in Training, INLPTA qualified Trainer and skilled Master Practitioner of NLP.
