About Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state for all of us. A definition of trance is that of an “altered state”, one which Milton Erickson described as “a state in which the client pays attention to what is really, immediately important, and disregards information that isn’t immediately important”.

Success Is an Altered State

Richard Bandler defines hypnosis and hypnotic procedures as simply about controlling altered states. He writes “There are as many types of altered states as there are people to imagine them. The possibilities are limitless”.

Great athletes go into altered states to do what they do – they will visualise their performance in training in order to repeat it in competition. You have to go into a slightly altered state just to be able to correctly spell a word. Richard Bandler goes on to say that:

“The biggest misconception is that hypnotic states are rare and under somebody else's control. The truth is you actually have more control over yourself in an altered state than you do in the waking state.”

How can I apply what I will learn?

The course is designed for people who are curious about hypnosis and have an enquiring mind. You could choose to use your skills in:

  • Trusting your Inner Self – Connect and communicate with your unconscious mind and help others do the same. Get to know your intuition and make decisions easily and with confidence.
  • Hypnotic Storytelling – Understand and apply hypnotic language patterns that allow you to tell stories naturally and easily.
  • Dreams and Sleep – Freud said that “dreams are the royal road to the unconscious”. From this starting point explore the nature of dreams for helping relaxation and restful sleep.
  • Visualising Success – Help yourself and others to visualise and focus with confidence on their goals. Create a blueprint for what you want.

What will be covered?

The skills practiced will be suitable for anyone with an interest in hypnosis and will be applicable for coaches and therapists who work 1:1 as well as teachers, trainers and instructors who work with groups.

The Approach

Hypnosis and NLP are irrevocably intertwined after the creators of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder modelled and made explicit some of the techniques of Dr. Milton H. Erickson, the father of modern hypnosis. Bandler and Grinder would often disagree in seminars with one saying “there is no such thing as hypnosis” and the other saying “everything is hypnosis”. You could consider this course about helping you discover who was right...

My attitude to Hypnosis reflects the breadth of training I have enjoyed from leading including hypnotherapists like Steven Gilligan (often described as Milton Erickson’s Protégé) and Stephen Brooks (the first person to introduce Ericksonian Hypnosis to the UK) as well as NLP Master Trainers like John Overdurf and Julie Silverthorn (authors of the classic Training Trances). Central to my approach is the belief that each person has within themselves all the resources they need to grow and develop and that using hypnosis can help unlock potential and develop a greater sense of self.

I look forward to working with you.
